2016 Transit of Mercury

9th May 2016

SkyWatcher 90mm f/10.1 doublet refractor
Baader AstroSolar Visual Grade Protective Film
Celestron 2x Barlow
Canon 500D

The next few transits occur on 11th Nov 2019, 13th Nov 2032, 7th Nov 2039 and 7th May 2049.
Images Span 45 minutes starting 1113 UT to 1200 UT (1643 hrs IST to 1730 hrs IST).



The Sun's disk a few minutes before the start of transit... A few sunspots are visible....







Mercury slowly moves into view at the top still touching the Sun's disk, a phase known as Second Contact...
3 minutes of a 7hr 24min journey have elapsed.








About 40 minutes into the transit clearly showing Mercury's silhoutette over the Sun's disk.







A zoomed-in view of the inner world and the smallest planet in our Solar System....
Note that Pluto was demoted to a Minor Planet in 2003)
